Fertility can be one of those topics many of us tiptoe around,\u00a0even though it touches more people than we might think. In a recent Lived and Learnt session,\u00a0Creditsafers\u00a0Emma Ingram and Amy Semirli shared their experiences of fertility challenges to help build awareness and reduce stigma\u00a0on this important topic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0

It\u2019s worth saying upfront:\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no \u201ctypical\u201d fertility journey!\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Some people face difficulties\u00a0trying for\u00a0their first\u00a0child,\u00a0others experience secondary infertility (struggling after having had a child before), and many people never share what\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0going through.\u00a0Infertility can be a struggle for many\u00a0different reasons, at\u00a0different times, for different people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Despite the diversity, some\u00a0core\u00a0themes came through strongly in the session,\u00a0and\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0helpful for all of us to understand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\ud83d\udca1\u00a0Infertility Effects More People Than You Think<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

The NHS notes that around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0a lot of people quietly navigating appointments, waiting lists, and big emotions alongside everyday life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Emma and Amy noted a gap between the number of people that go through infertility struggles, and how little\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0talked about in everyday life and across news platforms.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\"\ud83c\udfe5\"\u00a0The NHS can help, but access\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0always simple<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

Support is available through the NHS, but people can face eligibility criteria and long waits depending on where they live. Even when you do get referred, it can take time to move through tests, consultations, and treatment options. An especially tough process\u00a0when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0already\u00a0struggling,\u00a0anxious\u00a0or exhausted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\ud83d\udcb5\"\u00a0Private treatment is expensive,\u00a0and outcomes are uncertain<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

Private fertility care can feel like the faster route, but it comes with major costs and no guarantees. As\u00a0Amy and Emma shared, treatment can sometimes feel like a \u201croll of the dice\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The UK regulator (HFEA) also reminds us that success rates vary significantly by age and personal circumstances,\u00a0so comparing yourself to someone else\u2019s story rarely helps.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8\" \u00a0The\u00a0emotional load is real and often hidden<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

One of the hardest parts of fertility struggles can be\u00a0the isolation,\u00a0especially when everyone around you seems to be announcing pregnancies, swapping parenting stories, or asking well-meaning questions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

People can experience shame, grief, anger, and a constant sense of being \u201cout of step\u201d.\u00a0While each person\u2019s experience is different, research consistently links infertility and fertility treatment with higher rates of anxiety and depression symptoms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\ud83d\udc9a\" \u00a0Community makes\u00a0a huge difference<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

One of the most difficult parts of experiencing infertility can be the isolation, shame, and anger that can come with it; it can range from feeling left out and noticing changes in how people treat you, to the irritation of getting unsolicited advice from others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Emma and Amy both\u00a0emphasised\u00a0the value of having someone who \u201cgets it\u201d\u00a0around.\u00a0Sometimes\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a partner, friend, colleague, or support group. Sometimes\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0simply knowing\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not alone\u00a0in what\u00a0can be a very isolating experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>

\"\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\" \u00a0Adoption\u00a0and other paths to parenthood matter too<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>

The session also highlighted adoption as an equally meaningful route to building a family.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not\u00a0necessarily\u00a0a \u201cbackup plan\u201d\u00a0either,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a valid\u00a0choice in its own right.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u2728\u00a0How to be supportive<\/span><\/h2>

Amy and Emma remind us that you don\u2019t need to find the perfect words. A few simple, considerate habits go a long way:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>

  • Be led by them.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0If someone chooses to share, listen and let them set the tone and level of detail.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
    • Keep questions gentle (or\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0ask at all).<\/span><\/b>\u00a0A simple \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d is often better than \u201cAny updates?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
      • Respect boundaries.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0If you\u00a0ask\u00a0\u201cDo you have children?\u201d and they say no, avoid digging further.\u00a0It\u00a0can be a painful topic, or simply a personal choice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
        • Offer practical support.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Treatment can mean appointments, waiting, fatigue, and emotional\u00a0ups and downs. Flexibility, patience, and small check-ins can really help.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
          • Avoid comparisons and \u201cfixing.\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Fertility journeys vary hugely \u2014 what worked for one person may not apply to another.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
            • Be mindful of everyday conversations.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Pregnancy announcements, baby talk, and well<\/span>\u2011meant jokes can land differently for someone\u00a0who\u2019s\u00a0struggling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
              • Remember community matters.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Feeling understood can make\u00a0a huge\u00a0difference,\u00a0sometimes the best support is simply being a steady, kind presence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

                Ultimately, the\u00a0goal\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0to say the perfect thing \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0to be considerate. If you know someone going through fertility issues, being kind, open, and respectful of boundaries can all help.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
